How to Protect Your TV During Load-Shedding

Load-shedding does not just interrupt your viewing. No device protects your TV as completely as removing it from the wall socket. After power returns, wait five to ten minutes before reconnecting, because the first minutes of restored supply are when spikes and fluctuations are most likely. Make it a household habit, the same way you lock the front door.

Choosing a surge protector that earns its keep

For the surges you cannot plan around, a plug-in surge protector is worthwhile insurance. Choose a reputable brand with a stated surge rating and, ideally, an indicator light that shows the protection is still active. Remember that protectors are sacrificial: every surge they absorb uses up capacity, so replace them after a known major surge or every few years in a heavy load-shedding area. A cheap multiplug with no surge rating protects nothing.

UPS and inverter backup for your TV

A small UPS or trolley inverter keeps the TV, decoder and router running through an outage, and it also smooths the switchover so your equipment never sees the raw restoration surge. Check the wattage of your TV and connected devices against the unit's continuous rating, and favour units with a pure sine wave output for sensitive electronics. This is the most comfortable option, though the unplugging habit still costs nothing and remains worth keeping.

A simple load-shedding routine for your lounge

Put the TV, decoder and sound equipment on one surge-protected multiplug so a single switch isolates everything. Before scheduled outages, power down and switch off at the wall. After restoration, wait a few minutes, then reconnect. Once a month, glance at the surge protector's indicator light and replace the unit if protection has expired. If your TV ever behaves strangely after an outage, restarting, clicking or refusing to start, have it checked before the fault gets worse.

Is it enough to just switch the TV off with the remote?

No. Standby mode leaves the power supply connected and exposed, so a restoration spike can still damage the TV. Switching off at the wall, or unplugging entirely, is what actually isolates the set. The remote only puts the TV to sleep; it does not disconnect anything.
