Smart TV Keeps Dropping WiFi: Real Fixes
A smart TV that connects, streams for a while and then drops off WiFi is maddening, but the causes are predictable: weak signal at the TV's location, congestion on the wireless band, flaky DNS, or an aggressive power-saving setting. TVs also have weaker WiFi hardware than phones, so a spot where your phone copes can still starve the TV. Here are the fixes that genuinely work, roughly in the order worth trying them.
Signal strength and router placement
Check the signal indicator in the TV's network menu. TVs mounted against walls, inside cabinets or with a metal-backed panel between them and the router often sit right on the edge of usable signal, and every microwave oven or neighbour's network tips them over. Moving the router higher and more central, or even a metre closer to open air, can transform stability. Brick walls and geysers between router and TV are notorious signal killers in South African homes.
Choose the right band: 2.4GHz vs 5GHz
Most routers broadcast two networks. The 5GHz band is faster and far less congested but has shorter range and struggles through walls; 2.4GHz travels further but shares its airspace with baby monitors, Bluetooth and every neighbour in range. If your TV is near the router, connect it to the 5GHz network. If it's rooms away, 2.4GHz may hold on more reliably. If both networks share one name, ask your provider how to split them so you can choose deliberately.
DNS, router restarts and firmware
If the TV shows connected but apps claim there's no internet, the DNS service turning names into addresses may be failing. In the TV's network settings, switch DNS from automatic to a public resolver such as 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1, then restart the TV; this cures a surprising number of phantom disconnections.
Also restart the router itself from the wall for thirty seconds, and check for TV firmware updates, since manufacturers regularly patch WiFi bugs. A router that has been running for months without a reboot is a suspect in its own right.
Settings and hardware workarounds
Dig through the TV's general settings for eco, power-saving or network standby options that shut the WiFi radio down aggressively; disabling them stops disconnects that always seem to happen after idle periods. If the TV's location is simply hostile to WiFi, run an Ethernet cable for a permanently stable connection, or place a mesh node or extender in the same room. A cable remains the gold standard for streaming without buffering or dropouts.
Why does my TV lose WiFi after load shedding?
When power returns, the TV often reconnects faster than the router finishes booting, fails to find the network, and gives up. Restarting the TV after the router is fully online usually fixes it. If it recurs constantly, forget the network on the TV and reconnect from scratch.
Is Ethernet really better than WiFi for a smart TV?
Yes, meaningfully. A cable eliminates interference, congestion and signal loss entirely, giving consistent speed and effectively zero dropouts. If your TV sits far from the router, a flat Ethernet cable run along a skirting board, or through existing trunking, is one of the best streaming upgrades available.
My phone stays connected but the TV drops. Why?
Phones carry better antennas and more mature WiFi chipsets than most TVs, and you also move around with a phone rather than leaving it in a signal dead spot. The TV lives permanently in whatever conditions exist behind it, so a marginal signal punishes it far more.
